This Thing Called Karma

kar·ma
noun /ˈkärmə/
  1. (in Hinduism and Buddhism) The sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences
  2. Destiny or fate, following as effect from cause
(source: Google Dictionary)

In Wicca, we live by the "Three-Fold Law of Return"; the way one lives will return to you three times over. Good actions will be returned three times, bad actions will be returned three times. One may not ever know how these returns come. But be assured, you will be rewarded in kind.

There are many sayings that all refer to karma: "What goes around, comes around", "Payback is a bitch", "You reap what you sow" are a few.

When many of us were little, we were taught "The Golden Rule": do unto others, as you would have them do unto you."  It makes sense, is a wonderful rule to live by and life would be beautiful if everyone followed this rule of brotherly/sisterly love.  Unfortunately, too many feel they are above the rules, or they live a terribly egocentric life. That backstabbing, name-calling, gossip-mongering, rumor-starting, petty squabbling ways are fine and the norm. Rules are made to be broken?

Common decency and courtesy shouldn't take much effort. Too often, though it seems the effort it takes to act in hypocritical fashion or self-serving ways is worth it to those who don't care a whit about karma.

A sad fact in this world of ours. No room for naivety or taking a person's words or actions at face value. We are at times forced to look at something with a jaundiced eye. Betrayal awaits those who are not aware that there are people in our path who say one thing, mean another and will turn on us in a heartbeat.

But Karma will find a way. Life is too short and too precious to waste worrying about these people and their  unctuous behavior. Do good, and you will be rewarded. Do bad, and you will also get what you deserve.

Just a few thoughts.

(note: this post was inspired by recent events both on the national and world front, and by some incidents lately in the blogging world.)

This is very much the theme of the moment as you said "everywhere". I am still naive in so many ways. Maybe I should not admit that but I have a hope always to be surprised, but in a good way by people. And the older I get the more I am less hurt by the negative and reinforced by the positive because I trust Karma. That trust allows me to enjoy and live in the moment. Only recently did I realize that I had been influenced by something that kept me afraid and on guard....it's gone and I'm back to the happy pea picker I am. Maybe my armor of "sunshine" will keep me safe, that and a thousand protections for and from my lovelies. Happy Sunday my dearest BB and super post. Oma Linda

You sure said it, my friend! It is simply unbelievable how many people overlook the karamic laws until it is much too late. And if they are smart, next time they will consider the consequences of their actions towards others. Witches learn this very early on I think.

Yes, I totally agree with you, Robin!

Hugs,

Kim

Wonderful post, Robin. You are a shining example of a person living their life surrounded by love. Thanks for letting your light shine my sister! Here is one I posted today on SE: (Replace the word, water with love.)

"Your life is like a river.
Keep the water flowing
and you will be refreshing,
life-giving, clear and beautiful.
Dam it up and you will stagnate."

Hugs, Sandy

Interestingly enough, my room-mate and I were discussing this very subject last night. Karma, the golden rule, what goes around comes around, be sure your sin shall find you. Seems to be something going around right now.

I'm late getting here today, but glad I stopped by. What you say is so true. Just check out my office and you have a mini view of what is going on in the world. Gossip, name-calling, snitching, backstabbing. It's all there. Thanks for a great post.

I believe in Karma because it is simply cause and effect. Eventually a certain behavior will have certain consequences. I find the trouble with unpleasant individuals is that their energy is contagious. It's not that we want to be like them, but sometimes in our attempts to defend or protect ourselves, we become less kind, less connected and become detached and unfeeling. It's a defense mechanism. It appears to be an epidemic these days unfortunately. But luckily it seems like many people are at least starting to notice it and calling attention to it.

Hi, I saw your comment on October Farm's recent post and I whole heartily agree with you. As a teacher, it's also something I try to teach my students - even they know about the "golden rule."

I think the interloper should be ashamed of herself.

I know our Kary is at peace, how I miss the warmth of her words and her friendship . . .

A resounding Amen and Awoman Sister!!! Very well spoken Robin...abide the three-fold law we must. It's one of the Universal Laws as Aine mentioned above.

Here's to living authentically, with love and compassion in our bones...

Very well said Robin! I have always had people say to me, that I am too kind. I so believe in the Three-Fold Law of Return. It's so sad, so many people don't care! Take advantage! Do horrible things! They will get it in the end!

Yes You are so right, this world would be perfect if we followed the Golden Rule!

Have a great day!

More truth could not be spoken, Robin. And I always have to wonder how people can even "enjoy" treating others with such disrespect. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night from feeling so bad about my actions. Humans just tend to amaze me.
