Well..A "Funny" Thing Happened on the Way To Surgery

Get this.  My husband had been admitted to the hospital. Gone through all the preliminaries, I.V. in place, funky hospital socks on his feet, wheeled down to the O.R. Waiting, waiting. Interviewed by anesthesiologist, the nursing assistant.  Waiting some more. Then the surgeon comes in and says:

"Did you receive instructions for pre-surgery preparation?"

"No," my husband says, "what instructions?"

It turns out he should have been on clear liquids for 24 hours before surgery, plus a large prescription bottle of, how shall I put this delicately, "bowel cleanser".

This was omitted from his pre-surgical interview two weeks ago.

So.......no surgery today. And it took forever to get out of the hospital. With all the protocols, we needed to wait for someone to fetch him back up to a room where he could have I.V. removed and get dressed. All the rooms had since been filled since he left there almost three hours before. I wanted to just pull out the I.V. myself at one point.

Now we wait for the scheduler to call us with a new surgery date.

At least they gave us a ticket for free parking.

Ooops! Someone at his doctor's office screwed up big time! Too bad -- more waiting and more anticipation.

Wow. I admire your calm handling of this.

When I read bowl cleanser, I thought that was a funny blog post title. But then, I put all kinds of wrong things in my titles.

Anyway, I digress.

Sorry for the delay. Hope he gets re-scheduled soon.

Oh no Robin, what a mess up and so hard to have to wait and 'anticipate' all over again...and knowing what he's going to have to do beforehand on top of that! I would have been pretty, erm, 'vocal' about it.

Sending warm thoughts to you and your husband; all the best to you.

well that is a let down. All the waiting, and mental preparation only to be turned away. Now the waiting starts again.

Robin, I am so sorry!!!! I thought that was weird, when I read what your husband ate. I just read your comment, that he was told nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Someone was not doing their job! I could have told you! Errrr.. this is not fun! Sending the both of your Big Warm Hugs! Have a whiskey on me tonight, with some honey ;o) Make it a hot toddy ;o)

For pitys sake! And doctors wonder why they get a bad rap!
I hope the surgery is not scheduled too far off. Hang in there! And keep those positive thoughts flowing!

Oh how maddening, Robin. I'm glad they checked before the surgery, but yes, someone goofed big time. They are fortunate you aren't crazy mad! I hope it's rescheduled stat and no more time is wasted. Hang in there. Ann

Wow - I'm glad that the doctor double checked! But what a pain - I know how hard it is to get released from a hospital! Better luck next time!

While the doc's office screwed up big time, let's thank our lucky stars...perhaps hubby was not supposed to go through surgery at that particular moment, and perhaps the Blessed Universe was watching over you both!

Hang in there Sister Love...big hugs from me to you and hubby too!

Good Goddess! Isn't that just patheltic? Then they wonder why their malpractice insurance is so high, eh?

I guess there really is never a dull moment in life? LOL!

Hugs to you both,

Kim

Ooooh dear! Not good. That was a huge lack of oversight on the scheduler/doc's office/hospitals part. That's a real shame. Fingers crossed he'll get a quick spot again for the surgery.

Oh Robin as a surgical nurse, I can't tell you how often this happens. Makes you kind of lose faith in the medical system, doesn't it??? Thank goodness the doc asked those questions... Mary A

Just wasn't meant to happen then. It all happens for a reason. I too was wondering how he could have whisky and cookies the night before. Oh dear :-)
