Dark Night

In my Wiccan practice, I keep track of Moon phases. It is a benefit to spellwork and other magickal practices to be aware of the Moon and her phases. Waxing moon, waning moon, new moon, full moon. Each of these stages of growth or diminishing are significant for the particular Energy one needs in regards to the intent of your Work.

Last night, the Moon was recorded as being "0% full". This information is helpful if you have a very cloudy night, or have not been paying attention to the Moon over the last few days (though how a Witch could not be aware of the Moon is hard to imagine....unless there is just a lot of chaos going on in one's life.....anyhoo!)

I call this phase "Dark Night". There are times I have no need to make use of this particular phase. Many people who practice the Craft do not do any spell work at this time feeling there is a void of energy. It really depends on your own personal path and how you use the Moon's energy. There is no One way...no right, not wrong. It is up to the Witch to decide.

I chose last night as a time to begin a month-long Spell Working. I prefer not to go into specifics, as I usually don't discuss my actual Spells. I stated my Intent, and began a literal working by disposing of some items that I feel have had a negative impact in my home. It happened to be "garbage eve", the night before the trash collectors come, so what better opportunity then to whisk away some things.

This Dark Night Working enabled me to start the spell off with a flourish, both physically and mentally. The New Moon begins a time of drawing good energies to us. I will be busy gathering, writing, creating, singing, drumming  and much more during this Waxing phase, so by the time the Full Moon phase arrives the Spell will be at its maximum power, so to speak.

Greetings BB:
I love to work on Dark Moon....for much as you said....the clearing away of the negative and re applying my face towards the new and clean and "fixed". Maybe it is my crone ness that has brought me to the realization that not all is negative on or about Dark Moon...in fact the powerful essence of this night is uplifting.

Blessings my friend, Oma Linda

Robin, I love hearing of the practices of others. I understand the need for at least some privacy, but thank you for sharing what you did. I think we all long for community and there is little of it around these days, so here in blogland we have it.

I see the dark moon as a time to honor the ancestors and also as a time of hatching, the first subtle phase of a spell. The anything is possible stage. I like the way you plan to carry this on for an entire cycle. It's so funny you mentioned the drumming, as today I organized my magic room and the drum was trying to get my attention!

I have been trying to clear out the energy too - opening lots of windows in this nice weather!

I did wonder why I didn't see the moon :-) Nrmally I keep track of the moon but other things has been on my mind lately as You know.

Beautiful photographs in You previous post! Life is beginning to show here as well but it will get colder next week so I hope everything out there takes it a bit easy :-)

Have a great day!
Christer.

Great post Robin! Thanks for sharing what you do on a "Dark Night". I have been trying to clear away some "garbage" too! It was weird last night, I couldn't sleep. Be well my friend ;o) Hugs ;o)
Oh, I forgot, when I was putting out the bird feeders today, a robin, landed on the post. She was talking away. I could have put my hand out and touched her, that's how close I was. I think I stood there for about 2 minutes, then she flew away. I said, good morning Robin, thanks for sending me the robin ;o)

This post made me think of the chant:

Dark of the moon,
New beginnings.
Dark of the moon,
Plant a seed tonight.
Dark of the moon,
What we envision
Will come to be
By the full moon's light!

I feel the time around now, the new moon is a time of the unknown, unseen. It's a time when I find it difficult to communicate properly with people or know how they feel, a time of confusion. Once the moon starts to appear again I feel a renewal and all the things I didn't know about becomes clear to me. I'm looking forward to that I can tell you! :)
