Swan Song

Today's front page story in the Syracuse Post-Standard is abysmally shocking and depressing for a everyone, but especially for a Wiccan. After yesterday's Earth Day celebration, to read this news this morning made me want to cry and then rant and rave. To read the story here is the link to Syracuse.com Swan story
Two beautiful swans named Manny and Faye, in the town of Manlius, near Syracuse, have been tending to a nest of 8 eggs in their little swan pond. This swan pond is a lovely spot, and much-beloved by the townsfolk, and by many others in the area.
Some person or persons, during the night, destroyed all the eggs. Broken shells were found up and down the street. The swan parents are now in a period of mourning. The callous, heartless, senseless act by these reprobates is very painful. There are many good people in the world who care so much for the planet and all upon it. This carnage is a visible representation of the other people who occupy space on earth who continue to cause the blight, the pollution, litter, and general lack of even the slightest concern for our Mother.
According to a spokesman for the town of Manlius, there is still time for this lovely pair of swans to re-nest. Efforts are being taken this week to construct a floating nest area on the pond itself for the parents to safely hatch their eggs.

We can hope for a happy ending to this sad story.

It never ceases to amaze me the downright meanness of people.

There ought to be a law concerning this outright cruelty to the Swans in this article...

I'm with you Robin!!!

Robin, this is such a sad story. My heart aches for those who destroy our universe. What causes someone to cause these acts of destruction to happen? We will probably never understand, or know.

Hoping for a Happy Ending,
Jan

That is just awful. There are some sick people in this world. Let's hope Mom and Dad can construct a new next for their eggs...and, as for the evil culprit or culprits, what goes around comes around.

How absolutely heartbreaking. Swans are so protective of their babies and I can only imagine how stressful and distraught they were. Some people would say animals can't feel such things, but I think that we know otherwise. Thank the goddess that there are some souls out there who are protecting them.

I am saddened by this news.
It's really a shame that such utterly heartless people are taking up valuable green space on this beloved planet we call Mother Earth!!! (Oops! Did I just say that?)
Here's to hoping that the pair of majestic birds are able to nest another clutch of eggs.

The nerve of some people! What they do under cover of darkness. I hope they are caught, and I hope these swans are able to renest.

I can never understand how these people think? It just makes me more sure that this planet would be much better off without us humans.

Wow, Robin.. that's HORRIBLE! I hope that nature finds a way to pay back what has been done to wrong this swan family.

This is so cruel and sad! Grrrr..
I remember once, last year, I saw two teenage boys throwing rocks at the squirrels, so, I don't know where I got the nerve, but I picked up some rocks and started throwing it at them. I first thought I was going to be beaten up. I yelled at them and said, how do you think the squirrels feel? They stopped. I hope I made my point! I hope the birds will lay eggs again!

mean people suck...having said that, the true just payback would be to find pieces of this "trash hats", as my Ry says lying in the road after someone carelessly threw them away with no regard. Breaks my heart. Oma Linda

honestly I do not hold up much hope for humanity. We are all so disconnected from nature and from each other. I can't imagine our race can survive if this doesn't change. Beautiful swans, poor things. I hope they will re-nest and I will think of them daily....

My eyes are tearing and my heart is aching. I am envisioning the best outcome for your swans. Please keep us posted on their progress, Robin.
