Blood Oranges Part 2

Well. I did not burn the house down. My son thought I was burning the orange slices in the oven. The blood oranges looked black. I think they would be great Halloween/Samhain decorations. Not, in my opinion, for Yule. Also, drying the oranges took almost 4 hours, and frankly, the smell of them drying filled the house with a not-pleasant odor. My brother asked if I was cleaning the oven.

The regular naval orange slices turned out okay. Not as nice as in the photos I have seen, but isn't that always the way. Still I will use them, hanging them onto a swag of greenery.

If you try drying (or eating) blood oranges, please let me know how it all turned out.

My next experiment: A Christmas cake with brandy. Another first time for me, cooking with brandy. I am not sure why I have become fixated on trying new things all of a sudden. I suppose it is because I wanted to incorporate something new into my Yule ritual.

Have a wonderful weekend!   Robin.

Sorry to hear the orange drying experiment did not go well. Thanks for saving me from even trying it. Blood oranges would be creepy looking inside if you had no idea of what to expect. I will tell you that they usually do taste excellent as juice or if you just eat the fresh fruit like a grapefruit. I'm surprised they smelled so bad as they dried out. Not the pretty slices you were looking for. Guess you have to go to Michael's Carfts store to find them already done for you to get nice looking ones. If you didn't already throw out your experimental orange slices, I'm sure the birds would love them (ugly or not). I can't stand wassail or mulled wine, so glad to hear that idea was nixed. Odds are now in your favor that the brandy cake will turn out excellent. Every Christmas I like to try one or two new recipes. You never know when you'll hit on a recipe that is so good it becomes a tradition. Last night at 11 PM I found a recipe for microwave peanut brittle. It only took a few minutes to make & just a few basic ingredients. I thought it would be disgusting, but the recipe actually worked and half of the pound of candy it made is already gone. Ya never know until you try a recipe if it's a keeper. Good luck on the brandy cake.

I've eaten blood oranges as a kid and they taste the same as a regular orange, maybe a little more bitter. The colour is rather off putting I agree. :)

I eat blood oranges every now and again and they are sour more than sweet. I've never dried any kind of oranges though but I think it's best to dry them slow since there's so much sugar in them and sugar doesn't look nice when burned :-)

So far very little baking here, I might start next weekend if I'll do it at all.

Have a great day!
Christer.

I've never had especially good luck with drying oranges until I dipped them in citric acid prior to in the oven. I know it sounds redundant...citric acid on oranges but it did help them keep a brighter color.
You and I may be in the same boat with photos right now. Rats.

I've never been tempted to try blood oranges. Just the name and look of them turn me off. Now, on the other hand, Christmas cake with brandy -- that gets my vote of approval!

Sorry Robin, I can't stop laughing! I've never tried to dry oranges, and I don't think I will now! LOL! Maybe for the brandy Christmas cake, have a drink of brandy first ;o) LOL! Hugs ;o)

I love that you are trying new things. Even if your experiments do not always turn out the way you like.

What's next?
