Of course, you know, This Means War!

My container garden is doing splendidly. The wedding garden is growing nicely; the cherry tomatoes, lettuces, herbs, all thriving. But wait! Oh ye Gods!!

Pot ## 1:Where are the plants?

Pot ##2: What the heck?

Pot #1 was planted with two bulbs of elephant ears.  Nothing is growing, and the bulbs are gone. Pot #2, A bulb from Pot #1 lies on top and has been gnawed on. To the left of the bulb lying on top is a partially dug up bulb. 4 bulbs planted, 2 missing in action. Culprit? Hmmmmm.....moving along to our next example:

A pot of rosemary, dug up, chewed up, dead

Parsley?
The photos don't really fully show the devastation, but something wicked this way has come. The parsley was sprouting so beautifully too.

Several other pots have been routed around in, fortunately not any of the wedding garden containers. I am a nature nut, you know. I love the wild things. But we all know who is responsible for this.

Let the battle begin.

Squirrels can be qutie tricky! Remember they are hungry to but see if you can work out a deal with them. For me I have probelm with bugs but instead of spraying horrible pesticides that kills are good bugs as well I make offerings to the spirits of the area. These spirits usually end up being bugs or some wild pig. I also plant decoys so that they will eat those instead of my precious vegetables.

Oh Robin, I know I shouldn't laugh but that last picture had me rolling.

Okay, seriously now...They are such pesky little turds! I am so sorry and do not blame you a bit for calling out war cries.

I'd be inclined to lay blame on some neighbourhood wild rabbits rather than a squirrel, but who knows?

Ah, that is such a shame, Robin. All that time a work, but perhaps think of it this way maybe, the outside critters need to eat, too! And atleast he didn't get into your wedding garden!!!! ;)

Blessings,

Kim

To all: Yep, I know critters gotta eat, which is why I have 4 feeders + hummingbird feeder in the back yard (during the winter there are 7 feeders) and on my front porch I have a peanut feeder for the squirrels. No rabbits can get on our back deck. I regularly honor the god and goddess in the garden, make offerings. So perhaps said squirrel feels comfortable here. Still...my parsley and elephant ears!!! And naturally no violence or toxic battles, maybe a shot from the hose, or a noise maker!!

Robin, I am so sorry, but I am laughing so much! The last picture is so adorable and I love the way you write ;o) I have a smile from ear to ear! I am really happy nothing happened to your wedding garden containers. Maybe the squirrels new not to touch them ;o) Keep on smiling my friend ;o)

I watched a documentary on squirrels once. It pretty much said that there is no keeping a squirrel out when it wants in. Maybe you could have a word with the squirrel and set up a food station just for it (make it as tricky as possible to keep the little booger interested of course).

Sorry, I know this is a serious matter, but I have to roar. The squirrel looks so relax (like if it just had a huge banquet - you picked the perfect picture). I hope they stop stealing your garden; bad, bad, wild things!

Been down this road many times..... I ended up putting chicken wire over the pots until the plants had sprouted, then I would cut the wire and fold it back to make larger holes for the plants to grow through. Seemed to do the trick. I've also had success with marigolds keeping out the squirrels. And my crew of helpers, both feline and canine assist in pesky critter control.
Good luck!!

Had that happen one year and discovered it was birds! Yup. Here I was blaming a neighborhood squirrel and it was blue jays. Boy, was I hopping mad! Had to revert to the chicken wire coverings. We are supposed to be smarter than the critters; right?
